50 Crore Grossers at Kerala Boxoffice

Over the years, KBO has witnessed some sensational blockbusters. But the post Covid era has pushed the limits of the box office further ahead. The fact that 5 out of 8, 50 Crore grossers have come during the post Covid era corroborates this theory. There is a massive thrust in the market potential following the choice of movies audience wish to experience on big screen. This choice has become only wider after their exposure to quality TV shows on OTT platforms. The audience started to look out for theatre experience but sadly only a few Malayalam movies have tapped the market properly after the post Covid era.

Going back to pre Covid era, KBO witnessed 3 50 plus grossers. Pulimurugan was the first movie to set the trend only after which the industry itself started to believe in the potential of the market. SSR delivered the epic Bahubali 2 that changed the total facet of Indian cinema. Though the movie was an Industry hit in so many markets, it couldn’t go past Pulimurugan at KBO though it stretched out to INR 70 Crore plus. Later after a few dry years, it was Mohanlal again who generated yet another INR 50 Crore plus grosser at KBO through Lucifer.

The market potential was realised but no major Malayalam movies could still make it big at KBO. In fact, only one movie was able to touch even the INR 40 Crore mark at KBO during this period. But the post Covid era movies has completely revamped the KBO starting with Bheeshmaparvam or to an extent Hridayam which was released amidst the Covid restrictions. Bheeshmaparvam made well over INR 45 Crore which unearthed the KBO potential to its fullest.

KGF 2 was the first movie to break into the INR 50 Crore club which eventually went on to surpass the collections of Lucifer at KBO. RRR, Vikram, PS1 & Avatar validated the fact that the audience will watch a commercial cinema despite its language. There weren’t much Malayalam movies that could shake the Boxoffice but Malikappuram & Romancham reaffirmed that the audience are still ready to storm into theatres for commercial cinema. 2018 Movie rewrote many records in the state by becoming the highest grosser at KBO. The long standing record of Pulimurugan was broken after 6 years. The movie witnessed heavy demand and many centres recorded unseen footfalls.

The re-emergence of KBO resulted in 3 more 50 Crore grossers in 2023. RDX, Jailer & Leo entered this coveted club following the massive success of 2018. Leo became the fastest movie to hit the 50 Crore mark. The movie also shattered the opening day record by miles on its way to the 50 Crore club.
