Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba Review..!

After the events of ‘Hasseen Dillruba’, the sociopathic couple are now in Agra and they are not together. It doesn’t mean Rishu has cut off his hand for nothing. It is just that they are not living together as husband & wife. They smartly evaded the police last time. Do not if it was smart or is it because of the flawed writing of police characters. But they have managed to keep the police at bay for 5 years. We have witnessed how Inspector Kishore Rawat finally learned about Rishu & Rani’s secret. Now he has a chance to arrest both.

In Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, Rishu & Rani are planning to fly to Thailand in a matter of 2 weeks. They have waited for a long time staying separate while working and lying about their identity. With this hard earned money, they have finally got a chance to leave the country once and for all. They are waiting for a fake passport and visa which will arrive in 2 weeks time. But their plans are ruined when Inspector Kishore who is now an ACP tracks Rani to Agra.

Inspector Kishore tracks Rani Kashyap to Agra

At this point, he has read the ‘Dinesh Pandit’ book which was used by the couple to execute their cover-up. The police are supposed to do all their groundwork especially when the culprits are waiting for the police at the door. But instead the police give a visit to Rani alarming the couple especially when they suspect the presence of Rishi near Rani. Why wouldn’t they wait till Rishi meets Rani at some point of time.? They do have the call records and their plans to make fake passports through an agency. They could have easily kept surveillance to solve the case easily. If that were to happen, the story would have ended even before it began. So this is more lazy writing than plot convenience.

The makers resorted to a flawed idea to begin the story and now the couple need a plan to escape the police once again. They have introduced a few more players in the story. One of them being Abhimanyu played by Sunny Kaushal who falls for our haseena ‘Rani’. Another one is Mrityunjay played by Jimmy Shergil who is the police superior to Kishore.

Sunny Kaushal & Jimmy Shergill are the new cast additions in the sequel

When you think about the initial idea to kickstart the story was flawed, the character of Jimmy Shergil makes it even more dull. This character has a connection with the couple & Neel, who was killed in the prequel. It is personal for him and I wonder why he was not investigating the disappearance of Neel before. Now he comes to know that it was Rishu & Rani who killed Neel in the first place. So at this point the police force is supposed to be smart to nail the culprits. But they have no clue about Rishu even after all the surveillance in place. It is even ironic because the police are aware that Rishu is within a 2-3 kilometre radius of Agra. Come on now.? These plot holes are as silly as it gets. This is too far-fetched to consider that the couple are lucky that they are not yet in police custody. If you are to sink in with this idea, probably the movie can be enjoyed with more surprises and tensions, the movie throws at you.

The sequel had more tense episodes, more twists and turns, and conflicts to address. They have brought in the new players who are not going to stop until they resolve the case. We can consider Rishi has become such a professional criminal to make the entire police department run behind him. But Rani is still able to find ways to communicate with him and this leads them to drag in Sunny Kaushal’s Abhimanyu.

Rani & Rishu act like complete strangers in Agra

To be honest, his character brings life to the film amidst this visibly frustrating logic. To an extent, he even makes us concentrate on another brewing tale of love and betrayal. The conflicts that he brought to the table were really good such that the audience might think of a triangle love story. The obsession and unconditional love connects really well through their performance. Among the three, Sunny Kaushal was exceptional and took center stage all the time. At one point, we wonder who will come out on top as a sociopath. The mysteries also work fine even though the police force is pushed to the corner.

This franchise does not carry a rigid narration like the Drishyam series and also it is unlike the innocent triumphs at the end. Even for the central characters, there isn’t a whole level of emotional feeling that roots for them to succeed. But  we expect a compelling cat and mouse game. This is absent here. Rather we get more of a twisted and psychological connection brewing between the lead characters. This part works well.

Three-way story of love & betrayal involving Rishu, Rani & Abhimanyu

Maybe they could have focused on this part before bringing the police force. They could have built more conflict and finally present the escapade from police more convincingly. They could have covered up so many logical loopholes as well. So what happens in the film is that the character of Rishi gets underwritten here. This character displays the flaws in the sequel. The police couldn’t arrest him but at one point, even Rishi thinks of surrendering before the police. If they could have focussed a bit more on the efforts of Rishi & Rani to evade the police by not explicitly presenting the character of Vikrant Massey, this would have been a solid thriller.

Compared to the prequel, the police department is stronger but flawed like the prequel. But the complicated tale of love and betrayal was stronger here. The twist and turns also work fine. But the core theme is still repetitive. Why should Tapsee Pannu’s Rani always have the task in hand to get the grilling of the police and mislead them.? But that is the theme and the sequel picked up a good idea to continue their story by introducing the character of Sunny Kaushal who plays it to perfection.

Finally, Phir Aayi Hasseena Dillruba is a similar far-fetched and clumsy narration like the prequel with more twist & turns.
