Kannur Squad Review

Based on a real story, this Mammootty starrer caught everyone’s attention with a promising trailer. The film maintained a low profile and never used any hype or promotions before its release. But the biggest driving element behind the movie is none other than the fact the movie is produced under the banner Mammootty Kampany. And the actor in Mammootty as off late has been trying different characters and setting up a benchmark for many artists to follow. Did Mammooty & his production house succeed with Kannur Squad.?

Kannur Squad starts with a team of officers who are in pursuit of some criminals hiding in a deep forest near Kerala – Karnataka Border. The protagonists are introduced with a technically well executed sequence. With this beginning sequence, the makers are explicitly making it clear about what the audience should be expecting later on in this movie. The movie proceeds with numerous moments establishing each and every character after which a chilling intermission sequence arrives. The storytelling and packaging needs special applause as it never makes the characters or the sequences go overboard. There is a thin layer that separates the making from following a commercial template.

The second half starts slowly but finds pace with a riveting action block. This moment brings a sudden shift from a rather down to earth narration to a cinematic experience. The makers made sure there are more conflicts, hurdles and thrills before seeing a spectacular finish to a fantastic film. The emotions worked out really well and the barbarity of crime pushes the audience to stay with the protagonists until the very end. Mammootty never had a heroic shade in this film but whenever he appears on screen, there is a belief that the character is going to save the day. George is a role that belongs safe with a versatile actor like Mammootty. Much of the credit goes to Sushin Shyam who lifts up the mood of the film at every point and makes the audience glued to seats.

VERDICT : Excellent content driven narration and well packaged to generate a cinematic experience to the viewers.
