Kantara Chapter 1 Shatters Global Box Office: ₹315 Cr in 4 Days, A Phenomenon Unfolds
Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1 has taken the global box office by storm, amassing a staggering ₹314.75 crore in just four days. The success of the first part, Kantara, served as a strong foundation for this sequel, marking a new high for Kannada cinema and expanding its reach across India and overseas.
The film’s domestic run has been nothing short of spectacular. Here’s a detailed breakdown by region:
Karnataka
The home turf started off brilliantly, grossing ₹22 crore on Day 1 and crossing ₹70 crore in its first four days. While KGF Chapter 2 had a stronger opening at ₹24.5 crore, Kantara Chapter 1 compensated over the weekend. Looking at the trend, becoming the all-time highest grosser in Karnataka seems very possible.
| Day | Kantara Chapter 1 | KGF Chapter 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday | ₹22.00 Cr | ₹24.50 Cr |
| Friday | ₹16.50 Cr | ₹18.00 Cr |
| Saturday | ₹18.00 Cr | ₹16.00 Cr |
| Sunday | ₹19.50 Cr | ₹17.00 Cr |
| Total | ₹76.00 Cr | ₹75.50 Cr |
Andhra Pradesh & Telangana
Kantara Chapter 1 opened strongly in the Telugu states, collecting over ₹14 crore on Day 1 and ₹52 crore over the weekend.
Tamil Nadu
Despite competition from Dhanush’s IdliKadai, the film carved out a solid space. On October 2, it earned over ₹6 crore, and from Saturday onwards, the trend shifted upward, pushing the total past ₹25 crore
Kerala
The first Kantara was a big hit in Kerala, earning over ₹18 crore in its final run. The sequel started off strong with pre-sales of ₹3.24 crore and grossed ₹6.06 crore on Day 1. By the end of the weekend, it had collected ₹22.5 crore—surpassing the lifetime total of the original.
North India
The Hindi version started slow but gained momentum over the weekend, collecting around ₹70 crore nett. It performed exceptionally well in Maharashtra, especially the Mumbai circuit, but was average in Delhi/UP. While the trend is positive, the reach outside core markets remains limited. Unlike Baahubali, KGF, or Pushpa, which broke out nationwide, Kantara’s appeal remains more regional, with stronger traction in CP Berar and Odisha.
Overseas Box Office
Kantara Chapter 1 has done well overseas, earning $6.25 million (₹55.75 crore). However, the returns may not justify the high acquisition costs, especially since Kannada films traditionally have limited overseas pull. Distributors were banking on the Hindi version to drive long-term returns, but it hasn’t taken off internationally.
While the Telugu and Kannada versions performed decently, they typically have short theatrical legs abroad. Unlike KGF Chapter 2, which earned $9 million from its Hindi version alone, Kantara Chapter 1 is unlikely to cross even $2 million in Hindi overseas, based on current trends.
